Town of Wallkill
DIAL-A-BUS

OFFICE HOURS (Reservations/Info)

Monday-Friday : 9:00AM-1:00PM

(845)692-7852 or (845)692-7800, Ext. 143

What is Dial-A-Bus?

We are a Town of Wallkill public transportation service open to all riders within the Town. Dial-A-Bus is a demand response system servicing as many riders as possible during any given hour. All service is by reservation only and must be called into our office in advance. Same day reservations are not accepted. Safety is given top priority on all fronts.

Service Area

All transportation must originate within the Town of Wallkill. We can transport you to any location within the Town. You may also go to the City of Middletown but you must return from the same location and on the same day.

Hours of Operation

Our buses run from 4:15AM through 8:30PM, Monday through Friday and 8:00AM through 3:00PM on Saturday.

Call-in hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 6:00PM. If your call is not answered, leave a message on the voicemail and someone will return your call. The office is closed on weekends and holidays. Messages for canceling a ride may be left on the voicemail at any time.

Fees

The one-way fare for a ride on the Dial-A-Bus is $1.00 for the general public. If you are a senior citizen (at least age 60) or handicapped the fare is $.50. For anyone carrying an ADA Card or Medicare Card the fee is $.50. If you would like more information about obtaining an ADA Card, please call the office. Children up to and including age 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Children age 4 and under are free and must be in a child safety seat.

Making a Reservation

Calling for a reservation can be done any time during regular office hours. All rides are as the schedule allows so have a 2nd choice ready if your 1st choice is not available. If you require a ride for the following day, your reservation call must be received by 1:00PM the business day before your scheduled trip. Reservations for Monday must be made by 1:00PM Friday. In the case of a Monday holiday, reservations for Tuesday must be made by the previous Friday. You may also call after or before office hours and leave a message on our 24-hour voicemail. However, no reservation will be scheduled until we can reach you directly to confirm the ride, which must be prior to 1:00 the day before your ride. Make certain that you leave your name, phone number and a brief message. We will return your call later that day or the next business day.

Getting Ready for your Ride

We want you to have a positive experience with the Dial-A-Bus so please be ready to board the bus when it arrives. The bus can arrive as much as 15 minutes prior to your scheduled pick up time or as much as 15 minutes after your scheduled time. Have your money ready to hand to the driver upon boarding the bus. Exact change is appreciated. Bills over $5.00 or more than ten (10) pennies (per ride) are not accepted.

Please wait for the bus in an area where you can see the bus and where the driver can see you. The driver will only wait 3 minutes for you to come out before leaving.

We are not a taxi service so you may have to ride on the bus awhile to enable the driver to transport other passengers.

Please be patient during this time. The driver is doing his/her job in the most efficient way possible.

Delays & Closings

If the weather is bad, we will take the bus off the road. If Middletown Schools are closed, we will NOT run. If there is a delay, we will begin with our 9:00AM rides. When we close, it will be broadcast on radio station WPDH, 101.5 FM.

Additional Information

If you are unable to keep your reservation, call the Office at least 2 hours prior to your scheduled pick up time to ensure that the driver receives the message canceling your ride for that day.

Any changes to your ride must be done through the office and can only be accommodated if it does NOT interfere with the driver’s schedule or route. Same day changes are not permitted.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do call for your reservation at least 2-3 days ahead.
Do tell the dispatcher if you need a wheelchair lift.
Do be ready on time for your ride.
Do pay the driver upon boarding the bus.
Do stay seated while the bus is moving.
Do wear your seat belt; all children must wear a seat belt or be in a child safety seat.
Do compliment your driver where applicable.
Do speak to other passengers in a soft voice – loud voices may take the driver’s attention off the road.

Don’t eat or drink while riding the bus.
Don’t smoke on the bus.
Don’t stand while the bus is moving.
Don’t bring aboard more packages than can fit into your lap. (usually 2-3 packages)
Don’t tell the driver how to do his/her job; this is something they already know. If there is a problem, please call the office.

**No Show & Cancellation Policy**

Any customer accumulating three (3) “no shows” within one week will be taken off the schedule and not be allowed to ride the bus for one month. A “no show” is when a driver arrives to pick up a customer and the customer does not ride. Waving a driver on (to say that you are not going) will count as a “no show.”

Any Customer accumulating six (6) “cancellations” within three weeks will be taken off the schedule and not be allowed to ride the bus for two (2) months. A cancellation is anyone who calls the office to cancel their ride between 2:00PM the business day prior to their ride and up to the time the driver arrives at their location. (if the driver arrives at your location and you do not ride it is considered a “no show”).

Anyone canceling their ride prior to 2:00PM the business day before the scheduled ride, will not be penalized since we will be taking you off the next day’s schedule and gives us the opportunity to schedule additional people in your time slot. Please give us as much notice as possible. However, once the next day’s schedule is printed by mid-afternoon, and you call to cancel than it will be counted as a cancellation.

Anyone returning to the schedule after one of the above situations, and if the same scenario continues, that person will be removed from our service for six months.
